CLUB HIGHLIGHTS

Spring Is In the Air

As the old saying goes for March, in like a lion, out like a lamb. Well, at the Chelsea Club this month it was just the opposite. In like a lamb, and out like a lion. We had a ball! There was nothing but FUN, FUN, FUN… and… FOOD, FOOD, FOOD. The Torch club diligently planned an excellent day for everyone from the very young to the young at heart at their Spring Party.

The day stared with everyone wearing bright spring colors. After all the members arrived they began the fun and games. The first event was Leprechaun Tag. Mr. JP dressed up in a green hoodie, with a backpack full of candy, and agreed to be our “Leprechaun in the Hood”. The rules of the game were simple; each group followed Mr. JP to the field and on the count of three got to chase him for a period of ten minutes. Anyone that tagged him got a bag full of candy. We had so many kids show up that day we had to break up into three groups. Our pore Leprechaun was so tired at the end of the game I was wondering if he was going to make it home. He ran from one end of the baseball field to the other, dodging kids, climbing high, and then, just finally collapsing. He still came out the victor, keeping most of his candy.

The Torch Club members also sold food for lunch and snacks. This time the kids got to plan the menu and go to Sam’s. It was so adorable watching them figuring out costs and profits. With paper and pencil they figured out what products would gain their Club the most money. The kitchen was so busy you would think they were giving things away for free.

Next was our birthday celebration. We got a really pretty cookie cake this time that welcomed spring as we sang Happy Birthday to all those born in February or March. Yummo!!!, if the cake didn’t pump them up with enough sugar than our next event did.

Ms. Cristal agreed to dress up as our Easter Bunny and hid all the eggs in the parking lot. In order to let every child have a chance to find eggs, we had to divide into groups again. Of course the first group was the wee ones. Once all the eggs were found, we emptied them, and turned them over to the Torch Club to fill them again. Once again, our cute little bunny went out to hide them.

Ms. Joyce got a little carried away with the candy, for after the third egg hunt we still had plenty left. Mr. JP came up with the idea of hiding it in the game room. This time each group had 3 minutes to collect as much candy as possible.

I think our proudest moment of the day was when the Torch Club had to clean up the disaster of a mess in the lunch room. Once the kids went to other areas and the Torch Club went to work without any complaints. They cleaned the room so spotless ALL the staff was stunned. It was a wonderful way to kick off spring and the best party this club has seen yet! I can’t wait for the next one!!!!!

Other great news in the Club is our Jr. Staff team. Our teens are really devoted to helping out the club and working with the kids. The program has only been running for a couple of months and their hours are quite surprising. Let me take a moment to honor those that have given so much of their time to the program. Lishard Muhammad, 112 hours, Kevin Ocasio, 82 hours, Jonathon Cotto, 63 hours, William Mencia, 57 hours, Felix Ortiz, 53 hours, and William Caldwell, 52 hours. Congratulation, boys, there were days, with your help that made our programming a top notch event.

Last, but not least, is the Youth of the Year program. Four members from the Chelsea Club were nominated for this honor. For weeks they have been writing essays, practicing public speaking, and giving all their time to the club and the kids. Our final judging for the Youth of the Year of Atlantic City took place on March 31, 2008 at the Pennsylvania Avenue Club. Our honored judges, Susan Pollard Freimanis, Rita DeStefano, and Steven D. Scherzer, Esq, and Rona Z. Kaplan, Esq. had the difficult task of selecting only one candidate for Youth of the Year. The teens were asked many questions about themselves and the difficulties teens face in today’s world. After many tears (from our judges) and the grueling process of picking just one person…… The winner is……… OOPs, you have to turn to the Youth of the Year page to find out!!!!!!!
